IPL 2022 is set to witness addition of 2 new franchises based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Hence, a mega auction will also take place ahead of the next year’s tournament. Ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction, the current 8 teams were asked to retain a maximum of 4 players in their squad, out of which there can a maximum of 3 domestic players, 2 overseas players, and 2 uncapped players.
On Tuesday (November 30), the 8 teams announced their retentions list for Indian Premier League 2022. A total of 27 players were retained by the 8 teams which comprised 19 domestic players and 8 overseas players. There were many popular players who did not get an entry into the retentions list. 5. Faf du Plessis (CSK)
Chennai Super Kings did not retain Faf du Plessis even after his fabulous batting performance in IPL 2021. The right-handed batsman slammed 633 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2021 at an average of 45.21, finishing as the 2nd highest run-getter.
The South African player also slammed 6 half-centuries, including a 95-run knock in one game. Instead of Faf du Plessis, the IPL 2021 champions CSK retained Moeen Ali for the overseas option.
4. Shreyas Iyer (DC)
Shreyas Iyer was the skipper of Delhi Capitals from mid- 2018 season to 2020 season. He also led the side to the final in IPL 2020, where they ended as runners-up of the tournament. However, the franchise did not retain him for IPL 2022.
Delhi Capitals retained Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, and Anrich Nortje. Reports claim that Shreyas Iyer wanted to lead the side but the franchise wanted Rishabh Pant to continue as captain.
3. KL Rahul (PBKS)
Punjab Kings retained 2 players for IPL 2022 namely Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh. PBKS skipper KL Rahul was not part of the retentions list which came as a big surprise to many fans. KL Rahul led the side in the last two seasons.
Although the team did not reach playoffs in any of the last two seasons, KL Rahul’s batting performance was phenomenal. The right-handed batsman finished as top run-getter in IPL 2020 and 3rd highest run-scorer in IPL 2021. The franchise claimed that it was KL Rahul’s decision to go into the auction.
2. Rashid Khan (SRH)
Rashid Khan, who is among the most dangerous spinners in T20 format, was not retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise named Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik in their retention list.
Rashid Khan scalped 18 wickets in 14 games in IPL 2021 and was the joint-most successful spinner with KKR’s Varun Chakravarthy. Reports say that the franchise could not finalize a deal with the right-arm spinner for retentions.
1. Harshal Patel (RCB)
Harshal Patel was another surprising release in IPL 2022 retentions. Royal Challengers Bangalore did not retain the right-arm pacer, who scalped 32 wickets in 15 matches in IPL 2021 at an average of 14.25. Patel also equalled Dwayne Bravo’s record of most wickets in an IPL season.
However, RCB went ahead with Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj for the retentions list. RCB still had a spot left for the 4th player but they did not pick Harshal Patel.
